GAEB to Excel Conversion – FAQ

Below are some common questions about this project. Whether you’re curious about GAEB files, the conversion process, I’ve got answers for you.

There are different GAEB implementations. I have tested the converter with official GAEB test files and optimized it accordingly. However, if something doesn't work with your file or content is displayed incorrectly, I appreciate your feedback!

    You have two options:

    • Contact form to describe the issue or
    • even better: if you want send your file to info@gaeb2excel.online with a short problem description. This way I can reproduce the issue and improve the converter for all users.

Then in a few days it might just work! Thanks for your support! 😊

GAEB stands for “Gemeinsamer Ausschuss Elektronik im Bauwesen” and is a standard file format used in the German construction industry for tender data.

They are not easily readable in common programs like Excel without conversion. This site converts those GAEB formats into Excel spreadsheets so you can view and edit the data.

Learn more about GAEB in the detailed guide to GAEB formats.

Simply use our online GAEB to Excel Converter: go to the Converter page (or click "Convert Now" on our homepage), upload your GAEB file, and the tool will generate an Excel .XLSX file for download. No additional software is needed.

For a detailed step-by-step walkthrough, check our conversion guide.

My converter supports the GAEB formats X81, X83, X84 and X86 at the moment. More formats are comming...

I also continuously ensure compatibility with the GAEB standard. The output is an .XLSX file (Microsoft Excel 2007+ format).

Yes. I take data privacy and security very seriously. Your files are transferred over secure SSL encryption, and any data used for analysis – for example, to improve the service – is anonymized.

No personally identifiable details are stored, and all sensitive content is only processed in aggregate. That said, I can't take responsibility for the server provider’s security practices.

No installation or signup is required. The GAEB to Excel conversion happens entirely in your web browser. Just drag-and-drop your file and get the result. You can use the service anonymously and for free.

The basic conversion service is free for reasonable use. You can convert files of moderate size at no charge.

Currently, my main focus is GAEB to Excel. However, we understand users may need the reverse (Excel to GAEB). I plan to add an Excel-to-GAEB converter soon.

If you need that, stay tuned or contact me for alternatives. (Once available, it will be listed on our site.)

Yes, our free conversion service has a limit of 5 MB per file. This is sufficient for most GAEB files.

Yes, our converter is designed to maintain all the essential data from your GAEB files. This includes item numbers, descriptions, quantities, units, prices, and totals. The resulting Excel file organizes this information in a clear, structured spreadsheet format.

GAEB 90 is an older format based on fixed-length data records, while GAEB XML uses the modern XML structure. GAEB XML offers more flexibility, better character support, and is the current industry standard. My converter currently supports only the new format.
